ScreenRetriever named as finalist in N.H. TechOut Competition

ScreenRetriever Offers Back-to-School Help for Homework, Online Safety

 Sudbury, Mass. (August 23, 2012) — The back-to-school season is a perfect time to help your children establish good homework habits. The lure of the Internet is hard for children to resist; yet it is critical to manage, as its distractions can lead to homework not getting done, bad time management, cyberbullying and more. Recent studies indicate that 70 percent of school-aged children hide their online activities from their parents.

How does Mom or Dad better handle the three Ps — Protect, Prevent, Parent — of online safety for their children?  Victoria Kempf, Internet Safety Expert, offers parents the following tips:

  •  Keep your child focused: The Internet is the go-to homework resource for children, but beyond the homework website are many tempting pages to explore. Keeping your children focused on homework is a core strategy in getting better grades. Use a live online monitoring tool to guide your children back to their homework should they go off task. Monitor their online activity live (e.g., Skype, Facebook, websites, etc.), as well as check in whenever you want some peace of mind.
  •  Do your own homework: We hear it often: Parents who want to keep their children safe on the Internet, only to find that they are too late. Keep open lines of communication with your children. Stay up-to-date through research. Use tools that can help you discover and retain cyberbullying evidence, and use it to immediately address the problem. Studies show that kids think twice about what they do on the Internet when they know parents are checking — that is a significant deterrent to inappropriate behavior online.
  •  Put it in writing: Many schools have Internet contracts outlining the use of computers. Read and become familiar with the contract, and ensure your children understand and agree to its terms. Then, do a similar one at home that focuses on online access safety and behaviors outside of school. Colleges and employers are increasingly savvy about online personal branding — what your children do or say online today will help define how they represent themselves online  in later years.
